What’s New?
Last month I mentioned how things do not slow down. I am weary to say that is still in fact the case. Still working a full time job that stresses me to my core and trying to juggle other life commitments and expenses. Facts of life that I am eager change, and I am inching my towards that change.
In looking over last month’s post I see I failed to mention I got a gig for an audiobook. I was warned by many a VO artist that audiobooks are not the wisest gigs for newbies. As they are marathons, not sprints -I need to up my cardio game to either. though-. Both for recording and editing. I never thought those who were warning me were wrong, but I did think “Wow! My first gig! That was fast.” and “I can do this….right? Yeah, I can do this.” Only to find myself a month later thinking “Ok, so it took me 5 hours to record that chapter, if that is my average pace…..times by 5, and then by 14….. Ok, so it’ll take me about 70 hours. I’ve got 6 weeks left, I can do this, right? Yeah….” I’ll conclude that cliff hanger next month.
It’s been loads of fun, coming up with character voices, doing silly vocal warm ups, and tripping over words so hard that I just turn my linguistic staggering and fall into it turning it into a full blown auditory summersault of sound. I just need more hours in a day to get it all this fun done. So I am on the hunt for a well paying part-time job to replace my full-time job. Since my bills do not allow for me to go full steam into what into a yet to be profitable venture. Because getting started in VO is not cheap. I have not paid for a single pay to play website, but I fear in time I will have to. Since this fun audiobook gig is the only one to find and like my sound just by the author finding my site so far. I am so very grateful for their finding me. I am also grateful that while I am running this marathon without having completed so much as a professional VO 5k before, that I am not being inundated with offers to run other marathons or sprints. Still finding my footing in recording and editing for now, there will be a time to welcome inundation. Truthfully, I cannot wait to have this audiobook all wrapped up so I can share a sample with the lovely folks who visit my demos page. At this juncture, though, I am trusting this experience is par for the beginners course.
In the coming month I intend to reach out to local businesses and see if I can spread my wings a little on the local commercial front. I have had jobs where I have cold called before, but not cold emailed. This will be well outside my comfort zone (as was the cold calling) and be another cliff hanger item to fill you all in on. If a business I have reached out to finds themselves here and reading this post, know that: your time taken to not only come to this site but also read my meandering thoughts as well is absolutely appreciated. Same is true for any who have even come so far as my meager home page. Obviously, if you have not gone further than that you have not read this note of appreciation. That’s ok, it’s felt all the same.
This post is super short this month and rather underwhelming. Primarily because not much is new. Making the title here act as a bit of a red herring. Because I think I can be clever like that, or cute, depends on the reader’s perspective and understanding of each word and the given context. I’m good with either. With the cliff hangers I’ve peppered in I hope next month’s post will warrant a lot more content and updating.
I have begun allowing for there to be a comment section. Again I am way out of my comfort zone here with that, the interwebs have seldom been known to be kind, you see. My hope, though, is for you dear reader, to let me know what you think of these posts so far. What topics do you think would be good to cover or be more engaging? How do you think this blog could best serve this site and it’s viewers? To all who provide kind and helpful, feedback, thank you in advance.
